YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Youngstown Phantoms (8-3-1-0, 16 pts) were defeated by The Madison Capitols 4-3 in overtime Sunday night. Youngstown had to scramble late to recover from a two-goal deficit, but couldn't grab the extra point from the bonus period.

"It's a three and three, we weren't expecting a high pace high energy game, it's hard to play two games in less than 24 hours," said Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Ward. "They should feel proud, and they should look at this as a successful weekend."

Youngstown started strong as Tory Pitner scored just 46 seconds into the first period, getting his fourth goal of the season. The rest of the first period was mainly a defensive battle with Madison outshooting Youngstown 9-7.

Andrew Kuzma of Madison was sent to the penalty box for a two-minute delay of game violation at 15:09 of the second, but it was Madison that took advantage of the call. Just as the penalty expired the Capitols went down the ice in a 2-on-1 rush that ended in Max Nagel firing one behind Owen Bartoszkiewicz (22 saves) to knot the game at 1-1.

Madison scored the opening two goals of the third period as well. Nagel blasted home his second goal of the game at 2:35 on a one-timer from the left circle and Aiden Long muscled home a short-handed goal at 5:46, giving the Capitols a two-goal lead early in the third period. Youngtown went back on the power play at 7:29 as Jack Henry was called for cross-checking. With time running out on the man advantage, Pitner's dump in was misplayed by Carsen Musser (24 saves) and came right to Adam Pietila, who fired into an empty net, cutting the two-goal lead to one at 9:14.

With time running out in regulation, Pietila struck again, redirecting Kuzma Voronin's shot behind Musser with 3:34 remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Despite the Phantoms' best efforts, James Hong of the Capitols scored at 2:45 of overtime, cutting across the net mouth and backhanding one past Bartoszkiewicz.

Dating back to last season and including the playoffs, Youngstown had won 12-straight games at home before this loss. The Phantoms will be back at home next Friday and Saturday night as they take on the Tri-City Storm. The puck drops at 7:05 for both games.
